Sea vs. Ocean: Are They Really That Different?

Ever wondered what truly separates a sea from an ocean? While often used interchangeably, subtle distinctions exist. The biggest difference lies in size and depth: oceans are vastly larger and deeper than seas. Think of it this way: oceans are the sprawling giants covering most of the Earth's surface, while seas are generally smaller, often partially enclosed by land, like the Mediterranean Sea or the Caribbean Sea.

Another key difference is location. Seas are typically located where the ocean meets land. They can be part of an ocean (a marginal sea) or be completely landlocked (like the Caspian Sea, technically a lake). Oceans, on the other hand, are the major, interconnected bodies of saltwater.

So, next time you're gazing at the water, remember that whether it's a sea or an ocean, you're looking at a vital part of our planet, teeming with life and crucial to our climate.
