We hear a lot about nationalism, but sometimes it's easier to understand something by looking at what it *isn't*. So, what are some non-examples of nationalism?
Feeling pride in your country's accomplishments? That's patriotism, a love for your nation. It differs from nationalism which often involves a belief in national superiority and a desire for national advancement, even at the expense of others.
Supporting your local sports team isn't nationalism either. It's a community bond and shared enthusiasm, distinct from the political ideology of nationalism.
Celebrating your cultural heritage – the food, music, and traditions passed down through generations – is also not nationalism. It's about embracing your identity and sharing it with the world, without necessarily believing your culture is superior or deserving of dominance.
In short, genuine human connection, pride without prejudice, and cultural celebration are all positive, but distinct, from the often divisive force of nationalism.
