Belly Button Blues? What Happens to Your Umbilicus During Pregnancy

Pregnancy brings a whirlwind of changes, and while you might be expecting the expanding belly, you might not be prepared for what happens to your umbilicus! Your 'innie' might become an 'outie' – or vice versa! Don't panic; it's completely normal.

As your uterus grows, it pushes forward against your abdominal wall, putting pressure on your belly button. This pressure can cause an 'innie' to flatten out and eventually pop outward. This usually happens in the second or third trimester. Some women find their belly button stays relatively unchanged, and that's perfectly fine too.

Will it stay that way forever? Usually not! After delivery, as your uterus shrinks back to its pre-pregnancy size, your belly button will likely return to its original state, though it might look a little different.

While a changing belly button is generally harmless, if you experience any pain, swelling, or discharge around your umbilicus, consult your doctor to rule out any underlying issues. Embrace the changes; your belly button is just another sign of the incredible journey your body is on!
