Don't Be Fooled! Identifying the Deadly Water Hemlock

Water hemlock: beautiful, yet deadly. This wildflower, often found near streams and marshes, is one of the most poisonous plants in North America. Mistaking it for edible plants like wild parsnip or carrots can have devastating consequences.

So, how do you identify it? Look for clusters of small, white flowers forming an umbrella-like shape (an umbel). Water hemlock typically grows 2-6 feet tall and has smooth, green stems. A key identifier is the water hemlock's roots: thick and fleshy with chambers that contain a yellowish, oily liquid. However, digging up the plant to check the roots is risky and should only be done by experts.

Remember, when in doubt, leave it alone! Familiarize yourself with local poisonous plants and consult reliable field guides before foraging. Your safety is paramount. If you suspect poisoning, seek immediate medical attention. Knowing what water hemlock looks like could save a life.
